Hello birders
Thanks to those who have replied to my posting about the late Koel.
Several correspondents have suggested that I may be mistaken in
attributing the calls I heard to an actual Koel. Of the suggested
sources of error (TV, Superb Lyrebird, Satin Bowerbird, and Common
Blackbird), I can eliminate two. The TV was on, but the calls came from
outside the house. There are no lyrebirds in our immediate vicinity. But
I can't eliminate the other two possibilities, There are bowerbirds and
blackbirds around our place. Given that I only heard the calls for about
10 seconds on a single occasion, and didn't see the bird responsible, I
can't be certain that what I heard must have been a Koel. All I can say
is that if it was mimicry, it was note perfect.
In support of the over wintering hypothesis, I see from the "Sydney
Morning Herald" of 26/5 that this has been the second warmest autumn in
Sydney since records began in 1859. Might not the freak weather
conditions tempt a straggler to linger in the south?
