Colin and all,

In your original posting, you said you heard the call after dark at 6.15pm (here in the Blue Mountains the sun is currently setting around 5.00pm). To my mind this would make it unlikely to have been a lyrebird, bowerbird or Common Blackbird, whereas Koels are well-known for calling at night. I wonder if other correspondents took this into account.

Cheers

Carol

Colin Scouler wrote (in part):
Several correspondents have suggested that I may be mistaken in
attributing the calls I heard to an actual Koel. Of the suggested
sources of error (TV, Superb Lyrebird, Satin Bowerbird, and Common
Blackbird), I can eliminate two. The TV was on, but the calls came from
outside the house. There are no lyrebirds in our immediate vicinity. But
I can't eliminate the other two possibilities, There are bowerbirds and
blackbirds around our place. Given that I only heard the calls for about
10 seconds on a single occasion, and didn't see the bird responsible, I
can't be certain that what I heard must have been a Koel. All I can say
is that if it was mimicry, it was note perfect.
