An old apiarist friend told me some years ago that Bumblebees will bite into the nectary of tubular flowers to gain access to the nectar, which they are otherwise unable to do. This poses a threat to the pollination and subsequent survival of these plants which are such an important nectar resource for the Honeyeaters.
