I've had a few replies with similar observations so it's clear that the CBC
do this during the day. However I'm sure that my observation was of the bird
at the Currawong nest after dark and this of course would be less likely to
be observed. I remember hearing, on a couple of nights, what I thought was a
Barn Owl or Masked Owl but it must have been the Currawong or Cuckoo making
the noise because I saw the Cuckoo fly from the tree immediately after.

Sorry I am a little late joining the conversation, but I have been away for
Easter.
One day at a back-water of the Bjielke-Petersen Dam near Nanango (north-west
of Brisbane - 100 kms ????) a friend and I were attracted by a "moaning"
sound nearby. When we investigated, we found a Channel-Billed Cuckoo
actually pushing a complaining Torresian Crow aside on its nest, obviously
to lay an egg. It seemed the male Cuckoo had attracted the male crow away,
but the female was not cunning about her task of laying. She departed
quickly, and the crow just seemed to settle on the nest again!
