Hi All,

On a Birds Australia Victoria Easter Campout (staying at Whimpey's) in
the Little Desert highlights included Slender-billed Thornbill, Western
Gerygone, Shy Heathwren and Southern Scrub-robin. Honeyeater included
Yellow-plumed, Purple-gaped, White-fronted and Tawny-crowned
Honeyeater. Overall woodland birds were high, with good numbers of
Peaceful Dove, Purple-crowned Lorikeet, all 8 species of Victorian
thornbill, Southern Whiteface, Hooded, Red-capped and Scarlet
Robin, Restless Flycatcher and Diamond Firetail. Brown Songlark and
Grey (race melanoptera 'Black-winged') Currawong were also seen.

During the weekend we visited a number of excellent sites, including
the Glenlee Flora and Fauna Reserve, a remnant forest of Bulloak
(Allocasuarina luehmannii), 20 km N of Nhill. Birds here included
Yellow-plumed Honeyeater, Southern Whiteface, Red-caped and Hooded
Robin and a wide variety of thornbill including Chestnut-rumped, Inland
and Yellow Thornbill.

Two areas are particularly good for Slender-billed Thornbill. Salt Lake
on the Salt Lake Track, but please note that this track in is very
sandy and access is 4x4. Also the banksia heathland bordering
farmland on the Harrow Nhill Road, approximately 2 km south of the
Stringybark Walk is good for Slender-billed Thornbill, Shy Hylacola and
Rufous Calamanthus. A couple of areas of mallee/broombush are
particularly good for Purple-gaped Honeyeater. The area immediately to
the west of the Sanctuary Nature Walk (near the entrance to the Kiata
Campground on the Kiata South Road); and also at the water bore 2 km
south of the Kiata Campsite (accessed via the Salt Lake Track).

At Whimpey's we recorded Western Gerygone, Diamond Firetail, Peaceful
Dove, Southern Scrub-robin, Shy Hylacola, Variegated Fairywren and
Scarlet Robin. (Thanks to Gordon and Colin Rich.)

Prior to visiting the Little Desert, I spend 3 days at Wartook in the
Northern Grampians. Birds seen here included a pair of Hooded Robin,
approx 20 White-throated Needletail and the 'black-capped' Varied
Sittella.

Cheers,

Tim Dolby
