A quick Sunday morning trip to Werribee came up with some wonderful
birding. The variety was not huge but there was a lot of interesting
sights. The Freckled Duck were on their normal rock in Lake Borrie south
and there were more Cape Barren Geese on the Paradise Rd ponds than I
have ever seen. There were very few waders but the Red-necked Stints
really did have red necks and it was easy to see how they got there
name. Even the remaining sharpies had beautiful colour. Down toward the
Conservation Ponds I got a good long look at a Blue wing Parrot and the
smattering of Royal Spoonbills, Great Crested Grebes and Brown Kites
along with large numbers of Pink-eared Ducks made for pleasant viewing.
An intersting sight on the way down to Werribee though was at the Little
River exit. Across the road in a newly plowed paddock was a sight that
had me swerve from 100k and into the break-down lane for a better look.
After a couple of good attempts at an accurate count there were 3 to 4
thousand Shelduck working the fresh dirt. They were as thick on the
ground as waders on the beach at Broome.
