Dear Fiona and birding-aussers, As far as I'm aware, there has been just one sighting of Swift Parrots in Victoria so far in 2004. Frank Pierce reported a flock of 10 or so about a fortnight ago, north-east of Melbourne (Yarra Valley). Birds were flying overhead. Over the past 2 years, I've had swifties arrive in March in my neighbourhood (Altona), but none so far despite me keeping a close eye (and ear) on all the local parrot action. I'm also yet to come across any in the box-ironbark areas on central Vic., but I've barely checked. There are some traditional 'early arrival' haunts throughout central Victoria - Mandurang Forest south of Bendigo is one such place, and I can only suggest Fiona that you visit, with your friend, places like this and check out for yourself. You might be pleasantly rewarded. The easter break is a good time for getting swifties in Victoria - certainly the population should well and truly be on the mainland by then. Just a reminder that Swift Parrot surveys (done in conjunction with Regent Honeyeater surveys) are going ahead again in 2004 - national weekend survey dates are 15-16 May, and 31 July-1 Aug. Debbie Saunders is the Swift Parrot Recovery Officer and she can be contacted at: 02 6125 2635 (Off-season Nov-Apr) or 02 6298 9733 (Migratory season May-Oct) Additional information, inlcuding Swift Parrot calls, survey forms and the National Recovery Plan are available electronically on the Birds Australia web site: www.birdsaustralia.com.au/birds/swift.html Best wishes, Chris At 15:38 24/03/04 +1100, you wrote: Hi Chris Tzaros Research and Conservation Officer Birds Australia (Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union) National Office 415 Riversdale Rd Hawthorn East, Vic., 3123 Ph: 03-9882-2622 Fax: 03-9882-2677 Email: Website address: http://www.birdsaustralia.com.au ***************************************************************************** Privileged/confidential information or data may be contained in this message.
