Dear Bob,

That is just such very dismal news.

You must be so saddened that your efforts came to naught.

To put the very smallest of bright lights on this sad event, I will tell you that the dear penguin brought lots of pleasure and interest and information to some little children overseas (I guess it's best that they are not told of the outcome).

I thought that Steve's photos were brilliant; you had to fall in love with the penguin.  What a personality.  So I mentioned its vagrant presence, and forwarded Steve's fantastic photos, to a genealogical correspondent of mine overseas.  Amazingly, it transpired that her Year 1 class had been studying penguins for all of their school year.  So she took the photos and the story to them.  They loved the penguin - and they learned so much.  About penguins, about geography, and about Australia.

Small consolation - but something at least.

Perhaps the cause of death may never be known - after all, how many parasites, diseases, other complaints are in wild penguin populations without causing death.

Very best regards,

Judy
