I found this on the net:
And I can't resist, for the sake of us non-medical types, pointing out that my trusted Macquarie Dictionary, gives "irises" as its first choice of plural, and "irides" only as second. And this is immediately followed by reference to the eye for the first meaning of iris, and giving no hint that we may not use the first plural for the first meaning. I shall continue to use irises should I have occasion to refer collectively to the diaphragms of both my eyes. All good fun.
