Hi Carol,
sounds wonderful.
Coincidentally, 70 species has become my
home target over the years. Of course suburban living makes this a
relatively difficult aim. The following 70s were obtained in the
northern suburbs of Sydney
My first 70 took 13 years in
Artarmon and we moved before I could exceed that target.
The second 70 was in Cammeray. With a
unit backing onto a bush reserve it was much easier and took
only 12 months until we moved.
I am now 2 short of 70 in Roseville,
after 22 months and hope to surpass the magic 70 next year. No doubt
you will do so on day 2..............yuk.
These numbers perhaps highlight the
importance of retaining inner city bush reserves and other urban
greenspace for maintaining a reasonable number of species. My house
lists have included such delights as 11 raptor species including
Pacific Baza, Square-tailed and Black Kites, Grey Goshawk and
Peregrines. I have also been lucky in having many small birds
such as Superb and Variegated Fairy-wren, Brown and White-throated
Gerygone, Rose Robin, Scarlet Honeyeater and Rufous Fantail. Yesterday
I had, amongst others, White-throated Treecreeper, Eastern Yellow
Robin and a pair of Eastern Whipbirds.
Sadly much of our greenspace is being
encroached upon by governments and their departments and by private
landholders.
Long live suburban reserves.
Andy
With the birdlist standing at 69 species yesterday afternoon, I
decided we
weren't leaving until I found one more to
make it 70. Then, as we were
