Phillip,
Noisy scrubbirds live in the coastal zone around Albany, but they were
also living in the Perth Hills [a rather different environment] during
the 19 century. Similarly, southern emu wrens are normally recorded in
the coastal zone up the east coast, but they also occur in the
McPherson Range ...
The bottom line is that distribution maps and conventional wisdom are
based on incomplete knowledge.
Regards, Laurie.

In August 1968, when walking along a rain forest track on Fraser

said that they only occured in the mountain ranges on the QLD-NSW
border, so I presumed I was mistaken. Recently I surfed them on the
Web to find a reference that they were once coastal but retreated due
to land clearing. All the Web sites desribing the Rufous Scrub Bird
described my sighting perfectly; preferred habitat; call, appearance &
behaviour. I'm now convinced my initial identification was correct.
