I've just remembered that several years ago, a friend who was living
near the Grampians (Vic.) bought a trio of domestic geese (one gander,
two females) and liberated them on a dam close to the house. She thought
they would be tame birds and nice pets, but found that they became very
wild indeed despite the fact that she fed them every day. She complained
that they and their offspring vigorously attacked any wild birds which
came to the dam, and also any stock which came to drink. After a year
they had a few young goslings growing up, but most goslings had
disappeared, victims either of foxes or birds of prey. Despite their
inability to fly, they were quite uncatchable. Clearly removing them
would be no easy matter.
