If the Greylag goose isn't on a the official list
of Australian birds it ought to be, unfortunately. Here on Phillip island
there is a big problem with these feral birds which have established and are
making a bad name for the Cape barren Geese we also have as a wild
population. At Swan Lake (on Phillip Island Nature Park run
land) there used to be alsways several Cape Barren Geese to be seen.
This year there were no Cape Barrens, but several(40+) Greylags on at least
three visits I made to the Lake recently. The usual variety of waterfowl
at this usually abundantly populated venue was severely depleted. Nature
park management have been alerted to the problem, but as yet there has been no
visible action. Several of the larger dams on Phillip Island on private
land also host significant populations of these pests.
