Peter Barrand reports that a Pond Heron was among a fall of migrants which arrived at Christmas Is yesterday. When questioned as to which species, after further observation and research in MacKinnon & Phillips, the observers reckon its a Javan because it has a yellow iris as opposed to brown on Chinese Pond Heron. Same reference says indistinguishable in juv. and non-breeding plumage, and it's, not in breeding plumage. Hancock & Kushlan's Heron Handbook doesn't make this distinction. Can anyone comment on the reliability of this distinction. The only previous report of a Pond Heron was not satisfactorily resolved to species.
