Not sure about the magpies, but there are a pair of spur-winged plovers in
my local park with a pair of chicks, and the male will swoop on
anyone/anything which approaches them, he actually hit my dog yesterday when
we got too near. He also made a stream of calls before the attack, so seems
to have the same behaviour patterns as your magpies.
