Why would it be too extreme for a party in a Landcruiser? You could
drive from Birdsville to Quilpie in a 2WD. Thousands of people drive
that route every year [particularly in September for the Birdsville
races]. Over half the distance is on bitumen. If you can get to
Birdsville, you shouldn't have any problems driving on to Quilpie.
Driving from Birdsville to Alice Springs via the Simpson Desert, on the
other hand, would be a different matter.
Just make sure that your vehicle is in good nick, you are carrying
enough water, and you can handle mechanical problems. Given the
ongoing drought, it doesn't look like you'll have roads closed due to
rain.
You will find that SW Qld is a bit on the warm side in October - you
may have daytime maxes round 35-40 C, but living in Dubai and Congo
will have prepared you for that.
