I had an experience in the same area several years ago.....
Signed up the wife & kids for the "Penguin Tour" on a yacht parked
alongside the pier in St Kilda. I thougt it was a bit strange - we seemd to
be a long way from the penguin colony I knew existed at Phillip Island -
however, was willing to trust the Captain and was determined to get my money
back if we didn't see any penguins!
Dusk came, we boarded, along with 5 or 6 other people, and motored
out of the harbour. Sails set and we set off across the bay on a lovely
November evening. It was very pleasant and the kids enjoyed the thrill of
their first sail.
We got out a distance, after about 20 minutes and I realised we were
turning back. Round we came and back we headed. A bit bemused by now, I
shared raised eyebrows with my wife and prepared my "I want my money back"
speech....
Back into the harbour and then, closing down the motor, the yacht
drifted quietly along the harbouur wall while with a spotlight or two we
were introduced to the St Kilda penguins!! We saw a couple of young ones on
the rocks and watched a few adults return to feed. We even saw one swim
under the boat.
I laughed quietly to myself - we had a sail and we saw penguins -
not exactly the way we had imagined, but that's our problem isn't it? I
think it was probably a nicer way to see them than with the masses at P
Island anyway, from what I've heard, and the kids really enjoyed it.
The final 'co-incidence' ? I'm Irish too........
