Here in the Blue Mountains and NSW central tablelands, YTBCs form large
flocks in the extensive pine plantations around Hampton, Oberon and Newnes
Plateau. However, we also regularly see large winter flocks in native
heathland where they feed on hakea and banksia seeds (and other native
seeds). Each winter I see a flock of up to 150 or so near Wentworth Falls,
and just last week a friend told me he counted 130 on Narrow Neck near
Katoomba. They make a very impressive sight and sound when in those sort of
numbers.
