Hi,
The croziers of Cyathea spp treeferns are edible, usually roasted. Other
ferns such as Marattia ( potato fern) have edible stipe bases while Blechnum
and others have edible rhizomes. All are cooked as far as I know.
Cycadales are treated with heat and leaching before consumption.

Just the fact that some indigenous people used to eat a plant does not
necessarily mean that the plant is safe!
The inverse is also true as I have been warned off eating bush foods in some
parts of this country; foods which I have consumed elsewhere and, in one
case, a spice used widely in Asian cooking.

It is about that cold here now in the evening and the Swiftlets have
returned to Mt Bartle Frere ( at 1 622m Queensland highest peak!!! ) for the
night. Katarina, I missed Umeå when I was in your lovely country, just ran
out of time so headed back south.
