Ian, The half inch keeps out sparrows (just) they can squeeze through but can't get out in a hurry and don't try again. This behavior seems to have been passed on throughout the sparrow (House Sparrow) colony , which lives in the horseyards next door, as a "cultural" habit, I havn't seen one even try for yonks, but they feed around the edges of the cage.
