I always thought it was carrots that aided clear thinking? or was that visual improvements :^D>>> best record I've got is one Oz tree, supporting, all year round, a family of small birds.

The all year round family size was last noted at a flock of 35.

Food for thought

(From BOCA) We encourage our members to provide protection and food for native birds, where possible, through appropriate planting in gardens.

*Unlike in cold climates, Aussie birds do not need extra food in winter.
They appreciate extra water in summer.*

No mention of climate change? must be JAG's olde bones that thinks winters are getting cooler? whilst summers get hotter and dryer? Tassie never gets cold eh?

Wanders off practicing "Hurricanes hardly heather happen in Hampshire" obviously a pre global warming song.

Toodlepip, JAG is happily getting up the pole this arvo.

Val Curtis' last posting on the problem of feeding the exotic birds
reminded me of a friends bird feeder.

To prevent sparrows, Starlings etc from landing on her feed tray she had
steel mesh in the shape of an upturned bowl covering the tray. This
allowed Red-browed Finches and Superb Fairy-wrens to get through, but not sparrows or the larger honeyeaters. Fascinating to watch the sparrows and other birds trying again and again to get into the feed tray.

Of course spilt grain was available to the exotics but she only put a
limited amount of food out and varied the time of provision to prevent any
pattern developing.

Just something else to think about should one be using feed trays.
