This is somewhat of a simplification, but bio-economic limits have
constrained land clearing in SA & WA [in addition to the veg management
legislation in SA]. Basically much of SA and WA is too dry for land
clearing to be financially attractive. You won't find much clearing
north of Goyder's line in SA - not because people weren't keen to
clear, but because anyone who tried to grow crops and pastures was
knocked off by the arid climate. Since the sheep and cattle could live
off the native vegetation [eg old man saltbush] the graziers could make
a living without clearing.
The data on land clearing around Australia can be found in the reports
of the National Land and Water Resources Audit. The thing with land
clearing in Qld is that some bioregions [eg SE Qld & brigalow belt] and
vegetation types [eg rainforests and vine scrub] have been extensively
cleared [less than 20% left for several veg types].

In a previous posting, I stated:
"The percentage of the state that has been cleared is still way less

any of the other states." At the time of writing this, I had been
re-reading some reports that stated this was true. I have now been
corrected by Laurie Knight who has suggested that, perhaps the reports
I
used for my information were based on old data. Laurie has quoted his
up to

Northern Territory, Western Australia and South Australia have cleared
less
land (percentage wise) than Queensland. I always thought that the
South
Australians were enlightened in these matters but I now have to put the
Territorians and Western Australians in the same category.
