(For Abba Cuss and Dopey) When Penn met Gwynne

A long long time ago in the land of the warm south of planet earth, lived all the birds of this planet. This was so, just before a small planet, gently collided with earth. Thee impact site is where we now refer to this area as being the Pee'dcific Ocean. The gentle collision of these planets allowed microbes from the small freezing cold planet to cross over to planet earth and diversified life forms began on the new sized planet earth.

Soon earth began to lose its round shape and took on a more oval appearance. It also changed its rotational axis and pivot. It began a slow yawning wobble as it travelled around the sun. When the touching collision finally occurred it was not with a huge fireball and eruptions but with a steady slow increase in sea levels as this freezing cold planet nestled into the once warmer planet earth and they became one. Many of the large animals that once existed on planet earth were drowned or due to lack of natural native food they became extinct.

New species evolved over time and as the floodwaters receded a north and south ice pole formation occurred, more land and food became available. Birds were in their element. Water vapour clouds began to increase as the newly sized planet grew in area and flora diversity. Birds were afforded shade and many birds of darker colouring were created. Some were confused as to what was happening and thought it best to try to hide from the darkening clouds, which grew above them. They grew dark feathers on their back but kept their white feathers on their chest. They gave up flight as the clouds above them grew heavier and heavier, and the clouds became even more lower in the sky. Some fell into thee ocean from their vantage points. They caught and ate small fish for the first time as food. As they found the fish tasty to eat, they caught more and more, whilst growing slightly tubby in their appearance. Lack of flying over time created a much smaller wing size and a beak ideal for catching small fish developed. Excess oil from their diet became stored in a gland on their back and via the beak was used as natural oil for feather waterproofing. They became excellent swimmers and would live happily alongside each other in their grass-covered sand dunes, in burrow shaped homes. The first male was known as "Penn". Thee first female was known as "Gwynne" and they became known as the penguins. When Penn first saw Gwynne he couldn?t believe his eyes and tried to hide his eyes under his short stubby wings. He thought if I hide my eyes, then when I open them, she will be gone as if in dream, for she is truly beautiful and far too beautiful for me. But she was not gone after he opened his eyes and soon they exchanged names and addresses as penguins do and have always done.

Penn started to show off to Gwynne and would perform a dance that would dislodge the grass tussocks in the sand dunes where they first met. As he danced he saw he was building a home for his Gwynne, but one night he had a dream, and in that dream he saw that nights would grow colder and food not so plentiful. So he dug an even deeper burrow for them both and fitted it with a food storage larder to hold the precious fish food for them both. He knew that dark clouds would mean less fish. Love blossomed and grew between them and they would take turns in stocking their larder. Fishing as they called it became dangerous, a shark appeared and would from time to time cruise close to shore near to their home. They made friends with the shark, as the shark grew older.

Thee ageing shark became known as the "Grey Nurse Shark" and she promised to look after their young penguins when they were born. The shark asked when would the penguin chicks be born. And the shark said he would patrol the beach for them when this happened.

Life was good then, but soon more then just cooing and courting took place in their home and not long after that two penguin chicks were born. They arrived in two unusual shaped flying saucers which at first they were trapped in, after landing. But Penn and Gwynne knew if they sat on the flying saucers then their body heat would slightly expand the shell of the spacecraft, it would then weaken and crack with the penguin chicks inside escaping. And escape they did, on September the twenty first, to be greeted by their devoted parents who were most happy to see them at last.

Gwynne would sit very close to them to keep them warm as Penn went out shopping at "Birds Eye" for their food. Sometimes Penn would stay home to play with his children, as Gwynne would go out into the ocean shopping. Sometimes she would get large fish for her devoted hubby but always she would bring home small fry for her children.
