This is apropos 'One wonders what US tourism ...'
We were in the US in 1991 when my friend was doing academic research
with a US professor of economics. They both work in the field of natural
resource economics, especially of national parks, and we were tripped
around looking at parks here and there and meeting high-ranking parks
people.
After attending one day-long meeting (they were polite to 'old-duck' me
and let me sit in too) I remarked to the professor on the way home that
it seemed to me that they were only interested in getting more visitors
into their parks and not much interested (I could be polite too - I
thought 'not at all interested') in the birds or other wildlife.
'Ah,' he said, 'birds don't have votes.'
It took me a year to think of the response, so I didn't say it to him -
'Neither do your grandchildren, do they?' He has children and
step-children, greatly loved. Nice kids too.
