Once in a while you see an array of extraordinary birds. Saturday with Phil Maher in Deniliquin was one such. The first was Painted honeyeater in itself a fabulous siting. Closely followed by 40 or more Superb parrots sitting calmly in a tree not 20 yards distant.

Then on to White-backed swallow, a dozen or more wheeling about over a sand pit, Painted button-quail scurrying about in the woodland, Black falcon sitting in full view near a rubbish tip, and a dozen Pied honeyeaters feeding on saltbush berries.

Late afternoon and at least 4 Inland dotterel, a Letter-winged kite flying smoothly overhead as dusk gathered and then male and female Plains wanderer by spotlight to round the day off.

Simply marvellous. Oh and there were another seventy or more over the course of the weekend!
