For what it's worth, I have rung Darebin Council and they have no immediate
knowledge of any such plans. I spoke with ?Neil ?Williams who expressed
surprise that it would happen, and I am waiting for his return phone call to
confirm or deny the report.

The second thing is: Garganey? Really? When and at what time? I'd love to
see it.

Cheers, Mike

Subject: GRESSWELL LAKES - URGENT

On Jan 21st local Leader papers carried a story with coloured photos of
birds and birdwatchers at Gresswell Lakes (Bundoora, Vic.)with a
sub-heading:
'GRESSWELL A NEW HAVEN FOR WILDLIFE'.

Not for much longer!

All those who have been to to the Lakes to see Little Bitterns, Garganey,
Bluebilled Ducks and Baillon's Crakes - to say nothing of the other species
which have found it such a refuge from the drought - will share my outrage
at the news I have just received from Gayle McDonald. The lakes are to be
drained and dug up in a fortnight or so, in order to enlarge them to take
the extra drainage from a new housing estate called Lancaster Gate.

Will the Little Bitterns' first recorded breeding event in Victoria for
about a century fall victim to bulldozers?

This makes Darebin City Council's plan to install a bus-stop (with
associated litter problems) just beside the Lake in Main Drive, and the
damage and disturbance committed by uncontrolled dogs and cats, pale into
insignificance.

If any reader has any skill in effective agitation, please act NOW!

The Urban and Rural Land Authority has apparently collected data on trees in
the area but no faunal data...
