Hi All.
While reading up on the activities proposed for World Wetland Day around
Port Philip Bay, i came across a document outlining local council concerns
and public opinion about the deeping of the shipping channel and dredging
of Port Philip Bay.

I could see very little about the impact this would have on the
internationally listed RAMSAR wetlands that line the bay. The only mention
being those of Swan Bay, and the potential impact of silting of intertidal
mudflats, raised by the City of Greater Geelong.
There was no mention of the Avalon-Werribee-Altona wetlands which are one
of the most vital wader sites in Victoria. And it seems as if the City of
Wyndham (???responsible for the area???) only had a representation of 3
people at the meeting.
Does anyone have any idea what the effects of dredging might have on the
western coast line of Port Philip Bay(esp the RAMSAR estate site)?
My family has lived near the Bellerine Peninsula for a number of
generations, and i have been told that most of the now weed covered
shoreline, was previously unaffected by weed until the dredging of the
shipping channel.
My concern is that if the western side of the bay is also affected by weed,
there will be a loss of feeding/nesting areas for many waders that visit
the area.
Did anyone on the list attend any of these meetings?
