A memorable evening's spotlighting was had Sunday night in the company of
Chris Corben, Kathy Haydon and Ian Mackay in the Conondale Range, in the
Sunshine Coast hinterland.
The evening kicked off with a female masked owl perching nicely just after
dusk high in a tree on the Sunday Creek Road. A few kilometres up the road,
two more masked owls, probably juveniles, were calling incessantly but could
not be located; at least one appeared to be calling from within a nest-tree
hollow.
A little later, the first of three owlet-nightjars for the night was seen
well (many more were heard) followed at the same site by a calling female
marbled frogmouth in full throttle, perched on a roadside tree (tawny
frogmouths were seen earlier, and later). Still at the same site, a sooty
owl put in an appearance. A second sooty owl was spotted later from the
vehicle.
In between the birds were other goodies: a superb feathertail glider feeding
on sap high in a tallowood; a pair of yellow-bellied gliders in mid-canopy;
a smattering of greater gliders; a calling sugar glider; a spiny lobster, a
Conondale Range endemic, in one of the shrinking pools of Bundaroo Creek -
all agreed they had not seen these forests so dry.
