I also heard a gobble call in the night, which may have been a marbled frogmouth, but couldn't hear the click at the end [perhaps that doesn't carry as well as the rest of the call]. What other night callers have a gobble call like the marbled frogmouth?

Laurie,

I listened to a pair of Marbled Frogmouths at O'Reilly's last Wednesday 22nd Jan and only occasionally heard the click. The call of the two genders was quite different. The male called "coo-OOH" repeatedly, sometimes and the female responded with a much more guttural repeated "grr-RRH" as if she had a bad smoker's cough. The click seemed to end a different call, a descending and accelerating Hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo call.

The calls are loud, clear, distinctive and just wonderful to hear in the depths of a forest in the middle of the night.

Have a listen to David's Stewart's recording on Bird Calls of Lamington NP if you can get hold of it.

Cheers,
Ian
