Peter,
One of my earliest memorable birding experiences was seeing up to 10 Rufous Night Herons, mostly juveniles, perched conspicuosly on sparse eucs. beside the Onkaparinga River just upstream from the township (of Onkaparinga,SA). This was at mid-morning on a hot summer's day.
More recently, about 5 adults flew lazy circles over the Cooroy Sewerage Ponds (SE Qld.) mid-morning whilst getting from one patch of bush to the other. No furtiveness there!!
