Making a major assumption up front, viz., that my total warrants the
description "large", I'm going to step up to the plate.

I checked my Australian life list total on Tony Palliser's excellent web
page http://users.bigpond.net.au/palliser/pelagic/totals.html and found
that I last updated my list at 622 species in August 1998 (circa 4.5
years ago).

Interestingly enough I think the last new Australian bird for me was
something I got whilst on holiday at Noosa in July 1998! This pre-dates
my evolution from amateur to professional birder, and since working as a
research assistant and environmental consultant in Victoria, South
Australia and NSW (1999 onwards), I haven't had any local lifers (during
work time or otherwise). My Victorian list stands at 422, but this too
was entirely compiled in my pre-professional life.

The other thing worth noting is that it took me 20 years to accumulate
622 species in Australia, which gives you some idea about how small a
rush I'm in to tick them all off!! I make no apology though for keeping
various lists - life, Australian, states, other countries, etc. - they
offer me some trivial amusement from time to time.

Cheers -- Lawrie
