Hi all
the area around the old highway south of Fergusson River was certainly
a good one, not just for Gouldians. Hooded Parrots were often there
and also on occasion were Jacky Winter and Hooded Robin, both of which
are scarce that far north. I was quite devastated when I first saw the
swathe of destruction through the site for the railway, but must
remain hopeful that there is enough good habitat still there to
continue to support those and all the other birds that are normally
about. I have seen all the species above on both sides of the highway
so perhaps all is not lost.
As for whether the shops stock Denise's book, I presume in her
marketing she tried to get it into all places she thought possible.
It's not the case of sellers not being interested in bird books, just
not interested in *all* bird books!
Finally : ) If people want to look at waterfalls or crocodiles and
not birds, that's fine by me. The NT is a good place for it. And not
all bird tours or guides can be expected to be perfect. I have heard
some scathing comments about general commercial tour operators or
guides saying they are bird specialists and then showing they knew far
less than the foreign visitors, making some quite ridiculous errors of
identification and charging a lot of money. But perhaps that's not as
bad as the 'moan' I heard about some bird guide who only now and again
mentioned birds during brief pauses in the monologue of their life
story.
Happy birding
