I think you need to start with basic ID rather than worrying too much about
subspecies at first. I'm not sure what local guides may exist for the trees
of the Sydney area, but Leon Costerman's 'Native Trees and Shrubs of
South-eastern Australlia is a good non-technical guide, with some habitat
information as well. Published by Weldon Publishing.
It is nice to know the plants too - then there is always something to look
at when the birds are uncooperative.
