Hi All,
Re the recent discussion of early arrival dates for Latham's Snipe,
coincidentally I have received a message that a member of Blue Mountains
Bird Observers was watching a "long-billed wader" that he thinks was a
Latham's Snipe last Sunday afternoon, 4th August. (Although the observer
got a very good look at the bird, he is not previously familiar with the
species and only has "What Bird Is That", hence the uncertainty.) This bird
was at a dam at Kooringal Drive, off Castlereagh Road, Castlereagh (western
outskirts of Sydney). I won't be able to get down that way for at least a
week, so if anyone is in the vicinity and is able to check this out, please
let us know what you find. Thanks.
By the way, Pizzey states that some Latham's Snipe overwinter. Has anyone
seen/heard of overwintering birds in the Sydney region etc? The only
possible case I know of was one that came into the care of Blue Mountains
WIRES several years ago.
