Dear Fellow Dooleyphiles,

This rash of Swift Parrot sightings has prompted me to mention my first record
in six years of living in Richmond a few kms east of the Melbourne CBD. As I
struggled to get it together for the working week at about 7:00 on Monday
morning (5/8/02), I heard the unmistakeable explosive rapid chinking (almost
alarm-like) of a Swift Parrot flying out of a tree at speed and heading into the
distance. The tree was one of a number of non-indigenous eucalypts (E.
botyroides, and some sort of Ironbark) in a small park out the back of our
place. By the time I got around the corner to have a look there was no sign of
any sort of parrots, and no indication of which particular tree the bird came
from or how many friends (if any) she or he had with her or him.

Sounds like they might be moving through on their way back to Tasmania. This
was my first record of this species for the year despite half a dozen or so
trips to the Box-Ironbark country of Victoria this winter.

Also saw my first Great Egret for the suburb flying over the house on Sunday
morning (4/8/02).

Seeya,

Paul Peake.
