Subject: OBP winter count 2002 - French Island (Vict.)
As part of the 2002 Orange-bellied Parrot (OBP) count the Friends of French
Island checked past OBP saltmarsh sites on Sat 27 July.
French Island is in Western Port Bay south-east of Melbourne and we travelled
their by train, bus and boat.
No Neophema parrots were recorded but our Parks Victoria ranger advised that he
had observed up to 30 Blue-winged Parrots during the week, mainly in paddocks
off the roads. The only parrots we recorded were Eastern and Crimson Rosella's.
Some hightlights for the day were:
- a flock of about 50 Chestnut Teal on the Tortoise Head saltmarsh, the males
heads shimmering in the morning sunlight
- a single Caspian Tern feeding south of the Tankerton jetty
- abvout 140 Pied Oystercatchers on the old Tankerton jetty, waiting for the
tides to change.
In addition, we spotted an Echidna off the Ridge Track in the east of the island
and a feral cat was recorded behind the beach on the track to Tortoise Head.
During the weekend OBPs were recorded at Duck Island in Swan Bay near
Queenscliff and also a banded bird at the Spit near Werribee.
OBP count sheet to be forwarded to Birds Australia.
cheers
