Hi birders,

A friend and I went searching East Lakes golf course
and the Rockdale golf course near the Airport today.
For those non Sydneysiders this is south of Sydney
either side of Mascot Airport.

No sign of any unusual ducks - 2 white domestic ducks
at East Lakes, and at Rockdale Golf Course 6 walking
across a green where some Japanese were attempting to
tee off, an almost pure Mallard with 2 mallard crosses
on a pond, and 5 domestic geese - the groundsmen using
them as additional grass mowers?

Most unusual sightings were 3 Hoary-headed Grebes on
the big pond south side of Southern Cross Drive (with
lots of Hardheads) and 3 Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos
being harassed by A.Ravens at East Lakes.

A small flock of Spice Finches were on the Rockdale
Golf Course, feeding near Yellow and Yellow-rumped
Thornbills and Red-rumped Parrots - the latter are the
ones I usually see early morning in the old Norfolk
Pines at Eve St wetland and have missed on my last
three visits which have been late morning. The
Black-shouldered Kite looks as if it is going to nest
again in one of the pines but there was only one there
today perched on the top of a pine. The water level in
Eve St continues far too high and has many less water
birds compared with 6 or more years ago. I wonder what
the intentions for it are now? It certainly is no good
for migratory waders.
