A 20 min lunch break in the hide at Hasties (Nyletta Wetland) Swamp (17° 17
35E 145° 28 25S) near Atherton, Qld. (10/7/2002) saw 25 species recorded.
The Plumed-Whistle Duck numbers appeared to be less than the 10 000+ of a
few weeks ago but there was still at least 6000+. The Magpie Geese numbers
were about the same 3-5000, nowhere near the 60 000+ that were reported the
previous week, a few kms to the SW flying over east to west in a 25 min
period. 30+ Pink-eared Ducks were still around and there was a White-necked
Heron and a single Yellow-billed Spoonbill. A Grey Goshawk was on the ground
eating his lunch with 3 Whistling Kites also on the ground watching from a
safe distance, hoping for some leftovers. The water levels here are dropping
quite quickly as we have had no real rain for at least 2 months, so some of
these birds may be force to go elsewhere.

Cheers,
Keith.
