Chris and Danny,
Thanks for your information and advice regarding the Painted Snipe survey.
We spent much of last Sunday at the Western Treatment Plant, covering the
shallower lagoons in Permit Area 3 east of Little River, the Paradise Road
lagoons and (fairly intensively) Danny's suggested area just west of Lake
Borrie. Sadly, no luck with Painted Snipe - no guarantees that there
weren't any around, but we looked pretty hard at the more promising areas
without success, at least in terms of the target species. We did get some
good birds, though - lots of Red-kneed Dotterels and Banded Stilts, a
solitary Australian Crake, a pair of Cape Barren Geese at Paradise Road, a
single Freckled Duck at the north-western corner of Lake Borrie South (none
in the lagoon south of Lake Borrie, just north-west of the boat ramp), and
the first crested Pigeons I have seen on the WTP, flocks of four and six
birds respectively beside Beach Road, just west of the old shearing shed.
Had brunch in the Little River mouth bird-hide - nice to catch up with Paul
Hackett there and put a face to another birding-aus name - but the strong,
blustery (and very cold) westerly wind plus the high tide meant that we
didn't see too much there. Forms on the sites we did search will be in the
mail in the next day or so.
Anyone else have any success with Painted Snipe last weekend?
Regards,
Jack Krohn
