For the information of the group

I've had a few emails from members of the group advising me that many people may
be unaware that there is a central database for all fauna records (birds,
mammals, frogs, etc) where one can send data. This information is then used by
land managers across the Victoria and assists in determining conservation
priorities and management plans when addressing conservation of birds and their
habitats.

I've discussed this with the manager of the Atlas of Victorian Wildlife (AVW)
and he is happy for me to provide the following details.

The best contact is:

Atlas of Victorian Wildlife,
PO Box 137, Heidelberg 3084.
 ph 03 9450 8600.

Remember that observations are not restricted to birds. The Atlas prefers hard
copy records, although large numbers of electronic records would probably be
acceptable and some birding-aussers already do this. AVW staff are happy to
forward sheets, cards and instructions to interested parties.

As a regular contributor to both the Birds Australia Atlas and the AVW I
strongly encourage all birdos to forward copies of their data to the AVW via the
methods indicated above. I know from experience that Parks Victoria, Catchment
Management Authorities, local Councils, etc all seek information from the
database when examining land use issues. Your information could very well make
the difference to bird conservation in this state.

Data from AVW is also available upon request for contributors for any part of
Victoria and for any Victorian species. Information is in the form of species
lists and distribution maps.

cheers
