Subject: Horsfield's Bronze Cuckoo
I have just returned from Layang-Layang in the middle of
the south-china
sea, where I was amazed to see 3 of the above species of
Australian bird...I
can't imagine what they were doing there, but I was
wondering--has there
been an explosion of the species into our region this
year? Has it been
sighted in Singapore or Malaysia by any of you? If not,
double check those
Bronze-cuckoos!! It is easily distinguished (see your
field guides) and is
an open country bird. They were calling too on LLayang--a
single plaintive
descending note repeated at close intervals, reminescent
of the
Yellow-bellied Prinia's "chair" (not the trill). They
were coming down to
the ground to pick up caterpillars.
