I have recently been looking into the comparative leg lengths of Sharpie and
Pec but have become a little confused. BWP (Cramp and Simmons) says longer,
Handbook of Bird ID (Beaman and Madge) and HANZAB says longer but Shorebirds
(Prater and Marchant) says shorter (opposite plate 82 on page 200). I
realise that the majority SHOULD BE correct but does anyone have any
comments? I find it strange that the shorebirds bible could make such an
error, perhaps they meant to say shorter-necked rather than shorter-legged?
You guys get more chance than most to see these species side by side fairly
regularly so I'd appreciate any input you can give.
