For about half an hour between 2:00PM & 2:30pm we had
good views of a Crested Hawk foraging for insects in
the tree canopy at Cumberland State Forest in West
Pennant Hills, Sydney. The crest and the barring on
the chest and belly were clearly visible. The bird was
stil there when we left. It was in the tall gum trees
in the first picnic area on the left after the
entrance. Does anyone know if this bird is resident
here?
Other birds seen at Cumberland were:
Olive-backed oriole (1)
Bell miners (100s!)
Noisy miners
Sulphur-crested cockatoos
Rainbow lorikeets
Crimson rosella
Red-browed firetail
Superb blue fairy-wren
Kookaburra
Willie wagtail
No sign of the Boobook owl at Palm Gully, though.
On the Saturday, saw a Shining Bronze Cuckoo at the
Harold Reid Reserve in Castle Cove. There was also
some sort of long-tailed hawk (Brown Goshawk?) flying
over the tree canopy in Castle Cove and causing a lot
of consternation among the other birds. It alighted in
a tree near another bird, so possibly there was a pair
of them.
