A female Cotton Pygmy-Goose has been found in the Hunter Region. It was
found by Ann Lindsey, Jenny Powers, Nick Livanos, Joy Nicholls and Helen
and Brian Purdue of the Hunter Bird Observers Club. Alan Stuart and
Peter Phillips saw it at noon Saturday. I saw it a 4.30pm Saturday.
The bird is on a small pond which is a part of the decommissioned
sewerage works at Minmi.
Directions from Sydney: Exit the F3 freeway at the Newcastle link road.
Take the road to Minmi at the first roundabout. Proceed through Minmi
on the main street to the Fire Station on the Northern side of the
village. Turn right for 50 metres and park at the locked gate. Walk
through the unlocked gate and then go 250 metres north along the old
railway embankment. The Pygmy-Goose was on one of the three small
polishing ponds next to the treatment works plant. The bird is not
flighty like the ducks also on the pond and can be easily seen with
excellent views.
A pair of Black-necked Storks is also around the lower Hunter at present
. They have been seen several times at the Wetlands centre.
