I would like to add to Frank O'Connor's observation that "This seems to be a very good year for White-necked Herons near the coast. They have been very common in the south west of Western Australia since early May" During the past 2 months I have seem more White-necked Herons than expected on the Mornington Peninsula, southern Victoria, . On a couple of occasions they have been observed flying in flocks of 10 -20 birds. My biggest surprise was seeing one fly up from a rock pool on one of the Blairgowrie ocean beaches. Whilst, of course, White-faced Herons are commonly seen in these areas it was may first observation of a White-necked Heron feeding there.
