Hi Birders,
Chris Tzaros in discussing the
general absence of Swift Parrots from the Victorian box-ironbark woodlands,
poses the questions as to where are the other box-ironbark woodland honeyeaters
and lorikeets? The answer is, on the NSW Central Coast too!. In all the
excitement of having Swift Parrots in large numbers and some Regent Honeyeaters
here, I have omitted to say that of the 45 or so sites which were surveyed for
Swift Parrots etc on the National Count weekend, atleast 60% of sites have
Fuscous Honeyeaters and they are here in large numbers, the most that I have
seen since moving here in 1988. On average, Fuscous Honeyeaters are only
reported from Gosford/Wyong LGA (ie the Central Coast) every second year, and
then only in very small numbers, usually associated with the Swamp Mahogany
flowering. So far Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters have only been reported from Wyee
Point, on the western side of Lake Macquarie, but the number of Little Lorikeets
is also the most reported since 1988. In fact we have had extra-ordinary numbers
of Little Lorikeets since January-February, and they were reported from the
majority of survey sites too!
