g'day all,
To divert away from Syd and Tony's thread but to continue on
from John Leonard's note re origin of the name Jabiru
..
Another interesting name is the EMU.
It is not an Australian name but comes from
Arabia.
It may be summarised as a corruption of the word "Na-amah"
pronounced "na ema" for the Ostrich
My source is J.D.McDonald's well researched paper in Qld
Ornithological Societies (now Birds Qld) "The Sunbird", Vol 16, No. 3,
Sept 1986, pages 68 - 72. An abbreviated version is included in his "Illustrated
Dictionary of Australian Birds by Common Name"
If anyone is interested I could OCR copy the paper into a Word
document and email it to anyone interested.
Regards, Bob Forsyth, Mount Isa, NW Qld.
ps I prefer and use Jabiru to B-n S
