The bird definitely only had the one blue band on left leg. Whilst not
licenced as a bander, I've done enough related work
(Gould's Petrel Conservation Program) to know the importance of checking both
legs and that there can be multiple bands and
combinations over both legs.
Werribee certainly had plenty of long grasses in various places (which
grasshoppers might like) plus the cleared cattle
paddocks. There had obviously been some rain in recent weeks. Very nice to
hear that this bird is last year's hatching.

Thank you for reporting the colour banded brown falcon, every piece
of information helps.
Did you happen to see if the individual had more than one colour
band? The reason I ask is that nestlings raised at Werribee are
banded with only one colour band, whereas adults have one colour
band on one leg and two on the other. If the bird only had one band
(as I suspect it did given it was on the left), this indicates that the
bird was a female hatched in last years breeding season, giving an
age of c.7 months old.
It is also a very interesting sighting for this time of year, they tend
to dissapear for 2 years after fledging before returning. This season
has been the first of my study with large numbers of grasshoppers
about, so perhaps this extra food has allowed some birds to stay
closer to home?
