As Mike Carter rightly points out Black Petrel is hardly a common species
in Australian waters. However, the statement "Black Petrel is so rare,
that Birds Australia Rarities Committee must assess sightings before
acceptance." is not really accurate either.
Black Petrel is an uncommon but regular summer visitor to NSW waters as
documented by reports from the boat trips. I see small numbers evry
summer. Indeed, small groups of this Petrel are regularly recorded
indicating that the occurences are not merely restricted to wandering
individuals.
A number of Black Petrel have been banded in NSW waters in case anyone
wishes to question the validity of these observations.
