Chris,
If there are problems with this paper - which I am assuming from Mike's
email there are - I reckon it's more likely that the team involved are not
aware that birders are producing information that is worthy of review (for
the purpose of this email I am making a distinction between birdwatchers and
academic ornithologists*). It is a shame when birders are not regarded as a
source of important knowledge. This is particularly the case with offshore
Australia as we are not exactly blessed with information in the absence of a
national seabird monitoring scheme. Academics are still guessing pretty much
what is out there.
Simon.
*This distinction is fairly arbitrary. For instance, we live in a world
where much of our overseas ornithological knowledge is collected by a few
seriously dedicated amateur / semi-professional birdwatchers /
ornithologists. Pioneers include people like Craig Robson who produced the
guide to Birds of South East Asia or Mark Pearman in South America. People
who have helped pioneer much of what we know about seabirds in Australia are
known well to this group.
